Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph a client who lives in Silver Spring, Maryland right in Manassas. She originally didn’t have any specific place she wanted to do the shoot so we opted to do it at my favorite spot – the Manassas Battlefield.
This is such a versatile shoot location. Not only is it a beautiful outdoor space, but you can capture a bunch of different backgrounds in one area. This helps make photoshoots there more fun too, as the pups and other furry friends can run around and play in between shots!
This photoshoot was all about a ten-year-old Giant Schnauzer named Malcolm. It’s no secret that Schnauzers take up an extra special place (or a few places) in my heart.
Sandy, Malcolm’s mom, feels the same way. She even breeds Giant Schnauzers that are shown all over the world! Sandy has seven pups of her own – five Giant and one Mini Schnauzer, as well as a mutt.
Malcolm is extra special to Sandy though as he was one of the pups in her very first litter. In the early days, she started out by showing Malcolm! He was one of her first rockstar pups – but aren’t all Schnauzers rockstars?
The purpose of this day? To capture that perfect photo that would later become a large canvas of Malcolm to hang over Sandy’s fireplace. Ten is old for a larger dog breed so she wanted to make sure we captured some shots of Malcolm, as himself, to remember him in the future.
Although Malcolm is retired from the show ring, he is a total ham and he knows it! He is all about entertaining his audience – a true show dog.
We had to take breaks often throughout the shoot because he was being so silly. Whenever he chose to stop looking at the camera, he’d come over for some love (which of course, we couldn’t resist).
Like most dogs, Malcom loves squeaky toys. As a reward for making it through the shoot, and giving Sandy some fantastic shots she’ll cherish, he was beyond excited to get his very own Paws and Claws squeak toy at the end.
