Decorating with Photos

December 4, 2017meganbaden

You’ve made the decision to capture your family and pets on film.  Congratulations!  There is no better way to commemorate a specific time in your life than with a family photo.   Unfortunately, I hear too often from people that they’ve made the effort to hire a photographer, spend time picking the perfect outfits and deciding which photos they love most to print and then … they sit on a shelf, collecting dust.  It’s understandable.  Even the best decorators sometimes have a difficult time finding the ‘right’ place to hang a piece of artwork.

But when you make the decision to capture these precious moments, it’s important to also consider what you will do with them.  Life moves so quickly, we don’t have as much downtime as we used to and we don’t spend time flipping through photo albums.  That’s why I love what I do.  I don’t just offer guidance on photo shoot locations, ways to get your pets to say ‘cheese’ for the camera and capture the moment, I also assist my clients with using these photos to decorate their homes.

When I meet with a client, we discuss the items previously mentioned, the composition of the photographs, suggested colors/theme for clothing, and I spend a lot of time looking around their natural location to find what spot would bring out the best for their family.  Additionally, we discuss what they’d like from these photos.  Is it for a holiday card?  Maybe a large picture for over the mantle, or living room.  Perhaps it is an addition to the family gallery wall.  Or maybe, they’re just not sure.  I do love that challenge.  Working together, I can help my clients decide the best location, the type of framing that suits their style and where they can hang/place your photograph(s).

I use an augmented reality software that allows me to superimpose various types and sizes of pictures so clients can see what their photos will look like in their own house.  It’s a fantastic tool and it’s also really fun!  I take pictures of the walls, and décor, and can place the photo in various sizes anywhere on the virtual walls.  It takes the guesswork out of decorating and opens up a lot of possibilities that people don’t realize are there.  The best part is working together.  I especially like when clients bring new ideas, things they’ve seen on a décor show on online and we try to incorporate it into the family photo décor.  There really are many possibilities!

The final step is framing. Most times, I frame the photos for my clients and hang them when I deliver them.  For me it’s the perfect way to end a photo shoot.  From beginning to end, we work together. I enjoy delivering a product that my client loves, and I love knowing that my clients can look back on the experience each time they pass that wall.

Curious about how it all works?  Check out my website to learn more about my approach to personal sessions.
